True proficiency in yoga is not measured by the difficulty of the asana, rather it is measured by the level of refinement, breath and mind-fullness. Having said this, yoga also has the goal of building energy and higher energy only comes through harder practice.
If you are new to yoga look here at our suggested options.

PRINCIPLES CLASS
Deepen and refine your practice

As yoga has become more popular a lot of the growth has come from exercise or stretching style classes re-badged as yoga. While there are many valid approaches to yoga, real yoga uses your body and breath to train your mind so that you can discover and express your unique self..
In this 2 hour class we break down and practice the principles that we use in our yoga classes to capture the power that yoga has to offer.
These include:
Alignment, Awareness, Attitude, Action. The primary and support Bandhas, the breathing method, the foundation, focal points. Connecting to and moving from the centre, creating stability without strain, expansion and relaxation without collapsing, spirals, loops, muscle and organic energy, balance and transformation. Developing and working from the "witnessing state", observation and connection vs doing, an experimental attitude, the principles of dynamic meditation.
These are the same principles we teach in the foundation course.
The class runs from 2.00-4.00 p.m. on the Saturday afternoon immediately preceding the start of 6 week level one Astanga and Astanga Foundation yoga courses.
The class costs $20.

LEVEL 1 ASHTANGA
This is the general level of class we teach at The Yoga Place.
Our philosophy, in the tradition of Krishnamacharya in his later years, is that yoga should be adapted to the needs and capabilities of the students and not the other way around. With this spirit we teach the class with variations and adaptations and encourage students to work with awareness in a way that honours where they are at that creates space, freedom, and a feeling of lightness, energy and balance.
You can start at any time.
Beginners and new students are welcome and we hold regular ashtanga principles classes as an alternative and/or complimentary way to deepen the practice. For beginners who prefer a structured course approach we also have 6 week Ashtanga Foundation courses.
You can attend and pay for this class casually (cash, tickets, membership) or in six week blocks. Some students prefer this method because it helps them with commitment and structure. The dates of the blocks are on the courses page (you can still start at any time if you wish to pay this way).
Mats are available for $25.
Call us on 9555-7544 if you have any questions or send us an email

OPEN
LEVEL YOGA CLASSES
Open level yoga classes are dynamic vinyasa style classes.
If you are not farmiliar with the lingo, that means that you can expect a lot of dynamic movement driven by your breath - to activate, focus and concentrate your mind, stimulate the circulation of your blood and lymph and raise your core temperature. You will be doing a lot of upper body strength and flexibility work as well as core stability and balance work. Expect to sweat.
Having said that, the emphasis in yoga is awareness, balance, exploration, connection and effortless self expression rather than disconnected forcing.
To facilitate these principals, the movements are given with modifications and variations - recognise and work within your limits and even stop and rest if necessary.
We want to help you be more of yourself - not more of a clone.
The classes are suitable to all level of students and can be attended on a casual basis. Beginners can do easy variations of difficult movements.

MYSORE
In a mysore class, you practice at your own pace as dictated by your breath. You follow a sequence given to you by the teacher. You memorise this sequence. While you practice, the teacher may give you individual physical adjustments or verbal instructions to help you. As you progress, the teacher will give you additional asana or pranayama or change the sequence.
Mysore practice can also add some flexibility to your practice time. We start at 6 a.m. and finish at 8 a.m. Check the timetable. You have the flexibility to start at any time but need to be finished by 8 a.m. If you need a shorter practice because of time commitments or the way you are feeling, you can let your teacher know and your sequence can be adjusted to fit this.
If you have any queries, send us an email or call us on 9555-7544.
MYSORE OR LEAD CLASSES?
In "lead" group classes a student practices the same asana sequence as the other students, at a tempo that is set by the verbal instructions given by the teacher. At the beginning stages of practice this is the best way to learn the basic principles that make hatha yoga practice a form of mind-fullness training rather than simply another form of physical exercise system.
However, there comes a time when a student no longer needs to follow verbal instructions to feel connected to the energy of the breath and to feel dynamic balance. At this point, external verbal instruction can feel like it is getting in the way of the internal process and that the breathing pace set by the teacher is out- -of-sinc with the natural breath.
At this point, mysore style practice may be an appropriate way to shift practice to a new level where mind-fullness can predominate.

WHY SEASONAL CLASSES?
In today's world; 24/7, sedentary living, air-conditioning, and where takeaway food can be the order of the day, it is easy to loose connection with the natural rhythm of the seasons.
"So what?" you may ask.
The human race is a product of its environment. For the majority of our history we have lived a life that was more connected and dictated to by the natural rhythm of the environment. The impact of different seasons and the change of seasons on health was well known in the likes of India and China. These and other cultures developed rituals to harmonise the body to these changes. For example, most religions in the world, including Christianity, incorporate ritual fasts at important seasonal juncture points.
We are now living lives that our bodies were not designed for and the results are all too clear. Stress, obesity, type 2 diabetes, heart disease are diseases of the modern western economic culture.
