Prasad and associates from Wayne State University School of Medicine, Detroit, and associates treated the common cold in 50 volunteers who had cold symptoms for 24 hours or less. The participants took one lozenge every 2 to 3 hours while they were awake. In one group the lozenge was an inactive placebo while the other group the zinc acetate lozenge contained contained 13.3 milligrams of zinc. The average duration of cold symptoms was about 4 days in the zinc group. This compared to 7 in the placebo group. 56 percent of the zinc group had completely recovered of their colds after 4 day, whereas None of the "placebo group" was free of cold symptoms. A summary from the Australian medical Journal makes 4 points about zinc Summary

...Zinc plays a central role in metabolism, including the assimilation of metabolic fuel and maintenance of immune function.

...Zinc intake in Australian women is low.

...Women should increase their intake of zinc through food sources.

...Zinc supplementation greater than 25mg/day should be avoided.

We have a simple taste test that can indicate whether you have a zinc deficiency and could benefit from supplementation.

...One of it's main ingredients, Amla is one of the richest natural sources of vitamin C. It has strong antioxidant and immune strengthening anti-inflammatory properties.

Chemical in Plastic Bottles may be harming your children - US governement Health agency

If you or your children are drinking bottled water from a plastic bottle, feeding from a plastic baby bottle or infant formula from a can you might want to stop this ASAP.

This Tuesday a US government draft report warned that a bisphenol alos known as BPA, a chemical used in some "plastic food and drink packaging, including baby bottles may be tied to early puberty and prostate and breast cancer".

The draft findings come from the National Toxicology program which is part of the U.S. National Institutes of Health.

In Canada there are reports that the Canadian Health minister is about to declare BPA a dangerous substance. This would make it the first regulatory body in the world to make this determination.

As you might expect there are divergent opinions of the draft results between the chemical manufactures and environmental activists who have long warned about the potential harmful health effects the chemical. According to Reuters, "The American Chemistry Council industry group said the conclusions confirmed that human exposure to bisphenol A is extremely low and noted no direct evidence that exposure adversely affects reproduction or development in human" And from the environmentalists,

"NTP's decision corrects the scientific record. It reflects a significant body of science showing that BPA may play a larger role than previously thought in a host of common health problems," Anila Jacob of the Environmental Working Group said in a statement. ...Are you doing enough exercise?

If you are prepared to believe experts the latest recommendations released on the 1st August 2007 is that adults should be doing quite a bit of exercise. - moderately intense exercise for at least 30 minutes five days a week or - vigorous exercise at least 20 minutes three days each week.

...The American Heart Foundation and the American College of Sports medicine.

According to their definitions, Moderate-intensity aerobic activity can be a brisk walk, light jogging or other exercise that noticeably accelerates the heart rate. Vigorous-intensity exercise like jogging causes rapid breathing and a substantial increase in heart rate.

The guidelines called for weightlifting exercise to work on muscular strength and endurance, with eight to 10 different exercises on two nonconsecutive days a week. The new guidelines offered specific advice for people 65 and older, urging them to consider lifting weights, improving their strength to prevent falls, and working on flexibility exercises and balance training.

What are the risks we face if we fail to exercise?

"I think physical inactivity is the biggest public health problem we face. I think it actually accounts for more morbidity and mortality than anything except maybe cigarette smoking," said Steven Blair of the University of South Carolina, one of the experts who crafted the recommendations. Ailments linked to physical inactivity include cardiovascular disease, stroke, high blood pressure, diabetes, osteoporosis, obesity, colon cancer and breast cancer. "If you want to stay out of the nursing home, probably the best approach is to be sure you're physically active and fit," Blair said.

Both tissues appear to be vulnerable midway through the menstrual cycle, while the ligaments are at greater risk at the end. This is significant for women everywhere who can plan their schedules around their cycles and avoid potentially painful injuries

Rebecca Morrison British School of Osteopathy Midway through the cycle, the level of the female sex hormone oestrogen, which gives strength to muscles and ligaments, drops dramatically, resulting in sudden weakness.... This is to allow the cervix to open so that menstruation can occur, but it also means the ligaments in general are softened.... Loose joints Lead researcher Dr Stephen Sandler, an experienced osteopath, said: "There was a clear link between hormone levels and laxity of joints, making women more vulnerable to injury." I take good care of my back and regularly go to yoga and Pilates but would hurt my back just by bending down to tie my shoelaces up

Rona Call, Patient Dr Sandler compared hormone levels in the blood with the laxity of the forefinger joint.... His results also mean that women on the combined pill, who do not experience sudden drops in their oestrogen levels, are less likely to experience injury as the result of loosened joints. Dr Sandler said: "I had noted that, whereas men often came to me with injuries due to sport or over-exertion, women often couldn't explain why simple acts like reaching down to pick something up had caused injury and pain." Dr Sandler's survey found 21% of oestopaths' female patients reported pain in days 12-14 of their cycle and 17% in days 24-26.... Mysterious pattern Rebecca Morrison, of the British School of Osteopathy, said: "Studies have shown before that female athletes and those engaged in recreational sport were more prone to injury at certain times in their cycle and now we understand why. "This is significant for women everywhere who can plan their schedules around their cycles and avoid potentially painful injuries.... Rona Call, 35, a patient of Dr Sandler at The Portland Hospital, said she found she was always putting her back out at the same time every month.
